The Iowa Pork Producers Association is partnering with the State Department of Agriculture in asking lawmakers to provide funding for foreign animal disease preparedness efforts. IPPA’s Public Policy Director Drew Mogler says the money is needed to prepare against any possible outbreak of Foot and Mouth Disease or African Swine Fever.

He says the Iowa State Agriculture Department is the primary state agency for battling any foreign animal disease should it get into Iowa.

Mogler says Iowa lawmakers are just now getting into the appropriation process where funding is put together for various programs needed at the state level.

Mogler says while neither ASF or FMD has shown up in the United States yet, it’s critical officials are vigilant with protection efforts against any possible occurrence.
