The International Agency for Research on Cancer has issued a report classifying 2,4-D as a “possible carginogen”. In March the group gave glyphosate the same designation.
Daren Coppock, President and CEO of the Agricultural Retailers Association says these products have passed through hundreds of scientific studies and regulatory reviews and have been found safe. In the case of 2,4-D, he says it’s been an effective product in use for more than 70 years.
He says the IARC Study will provide a platform for activists and environmental groups to call for a ban and the misinformation only confuses consumers.
Coppock says the IARC analysis does not actually identify whether a compound is a carcinogen and it should not be the basis to ban useful crop protection tools.
According to Coppock the science concludes 2,4-D and glyphosate don’t increase health risks when used as directed. In fact, no government in the world considers them carcinogens.
