House Speaker Paul Ryan says the embargo against Cuba will continue, following President Obama’s directives to further loosen trade restrictions with the island nation. Iowa Farm Bureau President Craig Hill says the embargo needs to be lifted and trade allowed because it’s the right thing to do.

Ryan says allowing normal financing of trade with Cuba only promotes the Castro regime. However, Hill says it doesn’t make sense to continue an antiquated policy when both the U.S. and Cuba can benefit by trading with each other.

Hill says besides selling ag commodities to Cuba, the U.S. is in a position to help Cuba develop its own agricultural industry and feed themselves.

President Obama’s recent directive allows financing for farm inputs, such as crop protection products and machinery.
