Iowa State Senator Randy Feenstra of Hull says he will be proposing legislation next session to stop the Des Moines Waterworks Lawsuit against three Northwest Iowa counties. The Des Moines Waterworks is suing Buena Vista, Calhoun and Sac counties claiming nitrates and fertilizer from farm fields is causing pollution in state waterways. Feenstra says he’s talked with legal counsel prior to moving forward with this measure which he says will save taxpayers money.
Feenstra says the state has the authority to move forward with this type of legislation.
He admits it may be a tough lift to get his bill passed but says when figuring pollution the Des Moines Water Works and others need to look at the type of wells they’re using before pointing fingers and accusing farmers and ranchers.
Graham Gillette the chairman of the Des Moines Water Works Board of Trustees suggests that state officials could intervene in other ways to end the lawsuit.
