Nebraska gained a pair of Big Ten victories Thursday with wins by both the men’s and women’s basketball teams.

— Terran Petteway scored 20 points and Shavon Shields added 11, and Nebraska pulled away from Rutgers in the second half for a 65-49 victory Thursday night.

The Huskers (9-6, 1-2) are off to their best start in Big Ten play in their four years in the conference. Their previous starts were 0-4, 0-5 and 0-4.

— Emily Cady scored 16 points, including a go-ahead three-point play with 30 seconds remaining and No. 19 Nebraska beat Michigan State 71-67 on Thursday night.

The victory was the first in Big Ten play for the Cornhuskers (11-3, 1-2) after dropping their first two conference games.
