There was a Sunday women’s basketball showdown between in-state rivals who are among the best in Division 1 and Division 2.
Nebraska’s pressure defense held Wayne State to just 23 percent shooting in the first half to build a 43-15 halftime lead as the Huskers went on to an 84-43 win over the Wildcats in women’s exhibition basketball played Sunday afternoon at Pinnacle Bank Arena in Lincoln before a crowd of 4,948.
The Huskers made eight of their first 10 shots from the floor, building a 14-4 lead in the first 3:30 of the contest. Nebraska continued its hot shooting in the first half, making 17 of 29 shots for 58.6 percent, while holding the Wildcats to 7 of 30 for 23.3 percent as the Huskers built a 43-15 lead.
Nebraska outscored Wayne State in the second half 41-28 as the Wildcats shot 11 of 33 for 33.3 percent while the Huskers continued their strong shooting making 16 of 33 shots for 48 percent to make the final score 84-43.
Wayne State’s lone double digit scorer was senior forward Jordan Spencer with 11 points followed by Wayne junior Katie Hoskins and Milford sophomore Haley Moore with eight points apiece.
The Wildcats finished the game making 18 of 63 shots for 28.6 percent, going 3 for 11 from the 3-point line and 4 of 5 at the free throw line.
Nebraska was led by Emily Cady with 20 points and 11 rebounds. Brandi Jeffery chipped in 14, Tear’a Laudermill 12 and Allie Havers and Rachel Theriot with 10 each.
The Huskers made 33 of 62 shots from the field for 53.2 percent. NU was 6 of 19 beyond the arc and 12 for 18 at the free throw line.
Nebraska held a 47-31 advantage in rebounding over the Wildcats. Wynot freshman Maggie Schulte was the top Wildcat rebounder with seven followed by Katie Hoskins with four.
WSC had 16 turnovers in the game compared to 13 for the Huskers.
