Nebraska is joining a lawsuit challenging egg production standards in California. The case filed by officials in Missouri stands up for agriculture and fights anti agriculture policies and practices pushed for by the Humane Society of the United States.. HSUS Agriculture Director Joe Maxwell is disappointed by Nebraska’s move and says California has a right to pass laws to protect all of their people.
Nebraska Governor Dave Heineman and Attorney General Jon Bruning say they’re standing with Nebraska’s ag producers and will fight HSUS’s unconstitutional attempt to dictate farming practices in Nebraska. They also want their producers protected from the potential for regulatory burdens that hamper interstate trade. Maxwell says Nebraska’s leaders need to pay attention to their own laws rather than looking at California’s.
A recent attempt to protect interstate trade and fight back against anti ag standards was left out of the recently passed farm bill. That was the amendment offered by Iowa Representative Steve King.
