HSUS Pleased King Amendment Not In Conference Farm Bill Report

Humane Society of the United States officials are urging Congress to approve the farm bill sent out of the conference committee.  HSUS Ag Director Joe Maxwell says they’re pleased Congressman Steve King’s amendment was not included in the package. It would have prevented states from banning the sale of an agricultural product because there are objections to production methods.

Maxwell is also pleased that the conference committee included a provision making it a federal crime to attend or bring a child under the age of 16 to an animal fighting event. He says another positive was protection for the GIPSA rule and for Country of Origin Labeling.

Maxwell says his group would have liked to have seen more humane sustainable agriculture practices included in the final measure and is hoping to see those included in future packages.
