Humane Society of the United States members are hailing passage of the Omnibus budget that contained no funding for USDA Horse Inspectors. HSUS Ag Director Joe Maxwell says his group fought for that provision and are pleased it has brought horse slaughter to an end in the U.S. He says horses are not suited for human meat consumption.
Maxwell says if horses need to be put down, it should be done in a humane fashion and those who purchase horses need to make sure they have the time, money and experience to own them for a long period of time.
Maxwell says HSUS is working with horse breeders to make sure that they have a market for the horses that they breed in order to cut down on the amount of unwanted or unneeded animals.
