This week a group of evangelical Christian leaders launched an effort to educate people on a biblical imperative to take care of animals, including in agriculture. The initiative is called Every Living Thing and was put out with a statement signed by top evangelical scholars and pastors. Humane Society of the United States Ag Director Joe Maxwell says their group helped organize the meeting of the leaders which led to the initiative.
Maxwell thinks the initiative will have a large impact on how animals are treated in the country.
The Every Living Thing statement cites numerous Bible passages and makes it clear that it is OK to eat animal products and that humans have a greater worth than animals. However it also says God entrusted animals to our responsible rule and it does not mean we can treat animals as objects or act cruelly towards them.
