The Humane Society of the United States is expressing disappointment at last week’s decision by the Connecticut Legislature to defeat a measure banning gestation housing. HSUS Ag Director Joe Maxwell who raises hogs in Missouri says it’s not right for producers to use gestation stalls that limit the movement of the animals.
Maxwell says despite their defeat in Connecticut , HSUS is not losing ground on the hog housing issue. He says they’ve already had wins with convincing companies to not accept hogs kept in gestation stalls.
Maxwell says HSUS will continue to push their message forward and will work with others to find a solution to the gestation housing issue.
The majority of U.S. pork producers use gestation stalls for pregnant sows, a method that’s been approved by the American Veterinary Medical Association and American Association of Swine Veterinarians.
