A positive case of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) was confirmed in Buena Vista County, Iowa on Monday.  The virus was found in a 50,000 head commercial turkey flock.  Iowa State Veterinarian Dr. Jeff Kaisand says the Iowa Department of and APHIS have depopulated the flock and set up a control zone with 5 other commercial flocks quarantined.

Iowa Secretary of Agriculture Mike Naig says he is concerned about the early spread considering the migration of birds is not even in full swing.  However, he thinks they are better prepared to deal with the disease than in 2015.

Naig says so far there have been no export restrictions.

On Monday a positive case was reported in Nebraska in a wild goose in Lincoln and over the weekend in Charles Mix County, South Dakota in a commercial mixed flock.
