The House Ways and Means Committee is scheduled to hold a hearing on infrastructure on Wednesday. Soy Transportation Coalition Executive Director Mike Steenhoek hopes the panel comes up with some solutions to funding and fixing the deteriorating transportation system.
He says the House Ways and Means Committee has authority over taxes and should look at a possible increase in the federal fuel tax to help pay for infrastructure upkeep.
Steenhoek says they’ve recommended an increase in the federal fuel tax by 10 cents and indexing it to inflation as a way to raise funds for infrastructure.
He says other payment solutions that have been offered include raising the fuel tax 15 or 20 cents, while others oppose any tax increase.
