The House passed legislation to extend the authorization of the Livestock Mandatory Reporting Act (LMRA) through September 30, 2022. The bill now moves to the Senate where prospects are uncertain. South Dakota Pork Producers Council Executive Director Glenn Muller says the reauthorization is critical because it’s an important tool for establishing price.

Livestock Mandatory Reporting got another short-term extension until February 18 under the Continuing Resolution, but Muller says the goal is to have a long-term program.

Muller admits through that realistically a one-year extension may be the best hope for now.

Muller says the National Pork Producers Council would like to see several changes to the law such as reporting of price discounts and premiums, plus wholesale cuts. They also want swine and pork market formula purchases reported separately.
