The Farm Bill that passed the House on Wednesday contained a compromise in the dairy title which kept in the margin insurance program but left out the supply management component. That was needed in order for Speaker Boehner to allow the measure to proceed. House Ag Ranking member, Minnesota Congressman Collin Peterson says the dairy insurance provision will be beneficial.
Peterson says it remains to be seen what will happen without the supply management component in the dairy title and what effects will be seen down the road.
Peterson says the dairy title gives the Ag Secretary the authority to raise dairy insurance premiums if there’s an oversupply. He says there’s also a component that sets up a program where the Ag Secretary can make dairy purchases and give them to food banks.
