Next week the U.S. House Agriculture Committee will hold a hearing to look at the impacts of the EPA’s actions and regulations on the rural economy. Iowa Cattlemen’s Association President Dr. Phil Reemtsma says the major issue lawmakers need to look at is the EPA’s Waters of the U.S. rule.
Congress already passed a resolution of disapproval to stop WOTUS. However, President Obama vetoed it and an override failed. Reemtsma says he’s hoping the House Ag Committee can make progress with the EPA and get them to recognize the efforts farmers have made to enhance water quality. He says that’s evident in Iowa.
House Ag Chairman Michael Conaway says farmer and ranchers are the original conservationists and the EPA is seemingly oblivious to the efforts by agriculture to enhance the environment. He wants Congress and the EPA to be able to find ways to work together.
