House Agriculture Committee Chairman Mike Conaway says he’s moving head on the new farm bill next month. That’s despite the refusal of Democrats to negotiate SNAP or Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program provisions that would expand work requirements and eligibility rules. However, Nebraska Farmers Union President John Hansen says Conaway will need support from both parties to get a farm bill approved.
He says Congress must complete a farm bill this year because the longer they delay the more funding support they’ll lose.
Hansen says farmers also need a new farm bill as soon as possible to manage their current financial stress.
Conaway says he doesn’t care if he gets bi-partisan support, as long as he gets the 218 votes needed for passage.
