The 30-day public comment period for Hours of Service Regulations under the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration is now underway. Nebraska Pork Producers Association Executive Director Al Juhnke says the first electronic logging device rule was unworkable for livestock haulers so agriculture groups lobbied for a common sense change.
He’s pleased the federal agency is moving forward with public comment on areas for revision under the Hours of Service Rule.
Juhnke says the revisions are needed so livestock haulers can remain in compliance with federal regulations.
Revision comments are being taken on; expanding the short haul exemption from 12 hours on duty to 14 hours, extending the current 14 hour on duty limitation by up to two hours when a truck driver encounters adverse driving conditions, revising the current mandatory 30 minute break for truck drivers after 8 hours of continuous driving and reinstating the option for splitting up the required 10 hour off duty rest break for drivers operating trucks equipped with a sleeper berth compartment.
