Iowa Citizens for Community Improvement officials are pleased with the results of a local control survey sent out by the Dickinson County Board of Supervisors. 64 of 99 counties responded to the survey, with 23 percent wanting counties to have more local control over large farming operations. 19 percent were opposed and 22 percent had no opinion. ICCI farm and environment organizer Jess Mazour says the survey came about after Dickinson County Supervisors turned down some hog permits.
Mazour says the major question in the survey is should the existing Master Matrix system be repaired to include more local control for counties to preserve and protect the environment within their county. She says the current Matrix system is flawed and the survey results showed that.
The survey’s response rate shows there is significant interest both pro and con on the Matrix and local control issues statewide.
