Private, public, and non-profit land owners are invited to apply for grants through the Deadwood Fund program that helps to restore historical sites throughout South Dakota. About $100,000 dollars is set aside each year by the State Historical Society and is awarded to individuals and groups who are restoring historical sites and buildings. Liz Almlie is a historic preservation specialist and says the grants have helped many locations, including several currently being worked on in Yankton.

Last year, 11 projects received over $120,000 dollars. Almlie says each project that is granted funding must match the grant with other funds to be eligible.

Almlie says that the individual grants awarded are between $1,000 and $25,00 dollars. The next application deadline is October 1st and can be found at the Historical Society website.
