Conservative political think tank the Heritage Foundation is calling on Congress to get rid of the ARC and PLC programs in the next farm bill. In the meantime, they want to see caps put on the programs. National Corn Growers Association board member Keith Alverson who farms near Chester, South Dakota says his group will fight any attempts to get rid of ARC and PLC or even put limits on program funding.
He says ARC and PLC provide an important safety net for farmers and that’s especially needed now given the state of the depressed ag economy.
Alverson says both programs can be made more cost effective and efficient to benefit taxpayers and farmers.
Heritage Foundation officials say the cost of ARC and PLC are double what the original estimates had predicted they would be.
