The bomb cyclones in late March and early April have greatly stressed livestock in the Northern Plains and the impact on herd health is not over. SDSU Extension Veterinarian Dr. Russ Daly says in the next few weeks livestock producers will have diseases emerge in the herd in cows and especially calves.
He says calves with a weakened immune system due to the weather will be more susceptible to scours and pneumonia.
Daly says producers need to be especially vigilant in the next two weeks monitoring herd health.
Daly says another stressor to animal health once the snow melts, will be muddy feedlots, and that will also lower performance.
