The number of large animal veterinarians is down across the national at a time of rising demand for their services. So, keeping those vets in business and transitioning to the next generation is important. That was the focus of the James Bailey Herd Health Conference in Brookings.
SDSU Extension Veterinarian Dr. Russ Daly says the focus was on how vets can effectively practice medicine and also manage a profitable business.
The keynote speaker was Dr. Byron Farquer who is a Veterinarian and Certified Valuation Analyst. He helps vets value their practices to bring in the next generation of professionals.
The vets attending also learned how to attract and retain professionals in the business, especially in western South Dakota. And Dr. Jim Stangle, Veterinarian in Milesville says that is a problem.
Participants also discussed prominent herd health concerns in the industry such as reponse to emerging foreign animal diseases.
