Heat Stress to Cause Livestock Stress and Hurt Feedlot Gains

Heat Stress to Cause Livestock Stress and Hurt Feedlot Gains

Extreme heat and humidity is forecast for the Northern Plains this week which will produce high heat indices and possible livestock stress. Iowa State University Extension Beef Veterinarian Dr. Grant Dewell says that will negatively impact feed consumption and the rate of gain of cattle in feedlots. However, he says producers can help cattle manage that stress.

He says adjusting the ration is advised to help cattle deal with the heat.

Dewell says it’s important producers keep a close eye on at risk animals, such as those with illness or steers close to finishing.

He says it’s important producers planned ahead and if possible provide shade for their cattle. Dewell says having a consistent source of water is also critical.
