This week’s heat wave in the Northern Plains could negatively impact the bottom line for dairy producers with lower milk production. SDSU Extension Dairy Fields Specialist Tracey Erickson says it’s the prolonged heat and humidity that causes problems for dairy cattle.
She says for dairy cattle in the barns, it’s important producers provide good ventilation for the animals as well as sprinkling them with water to keep them cool.
Erickson advises to keep a close eye on the calves and make sure they have good shade and extra water.
Erickson says for the calves in the hutches to make sure and use a board or a brick to lift the hutch in order to get good ventilation to the animals.
