The weather forecast is calling for hot temperatures along with high humidity levels, all of which will place stress on feedlot cattle. South Dakota State University Extension Feedlot Specialist, Warren Rusche says cattle producers need to implement a plan for preventative measures to keep their cattle comfortable during the heat wave. Rusche says producers can modify feed bunks to create temporary water tanks. The SDSU feedlot specialist says cattle producers should look at reducing the feed intake for their market cattle. Rusche says cattle producers should consider spraying water on their feedlot herds. He says a fine mist may not provide the relief the cattle need. Instead he recommends watering the cattle with a water stream that will create heavy droplets that will penetrate the cattle’s heavy hair coat. The feedlot specialist says, if possible, producers should try to provide shade for their market cattle.
