D.J. Newbill scored 18 points, and Penn State shut down Iowa in the second half of a 67-58 victory on Thursday in the Big Ten tournament.
Ross Travis added 17 points and seven rebounds for the 13th-seeded Nittany Lions, who advanced with a 68-65 victory over Nebraska on the first day of the tourney. Geno Thorpe scored seven of his 11 points in the second half.
Aaron White had 21 points and 13 rebounds for Iowa (21-11), which had won six in a row and eight of 10. Jarrod Uthoff finished with 17 points and seven boards.
D’Angelo Russell scored 23 points, Shannon Scott had 21 and Ohio State beat Minnesota 79-73 in the Big Ten tournament on Thursday night.
Russell also had five rebounds and four assists as the sixth-seeded Buckeyes (23-9) bounced back from Sunday’s 72-48 loss to No. 6 Wisconsin in the season finale. Marc Loving scored 12 points, and Sam Thompson finished with nine points and seven rebounds in his return to his hometown.
DeAndre Mathieu scored 16 points for 11th-seeded Minnesota (18-15), and Andre Hollins scored 13. Carlos Morris added 12 points.
