Farmers in the region continue to face harvest delays in what has already been a frustrating growing season. According to USDA, corn harvest in South Dakota is at 9-percent verses the 29-percent average and soybean harvest in South Dakota is at 33-percent, well behind the 76-percent average. Aberdeen farmer Craig Schaunaman says they received snow and rain with the October snowstorm. They were back in the field harvesting by the end of the week trying to get caught up, as they’re well over half done on soybeans, but that’s behind normal.
He says soybeans yields have been better than a year ago on their farm, but that’s because they were too dry in 2018.
Temperatures also dipped below freezing last week which ended the growing season for many areas, but Schaunaman says their corn was mature.
He is expecting his corn yields to run from 180 to 200 bushels per acre.
