More than half of all states are reporting cases of acute flaccid myelitis or AFM that causes polio-like symptoms in children. University of Nebraska Medical Center’s Director of Infectious Diseases Dr. Marc Rupp say Nebraska is among the states dealing with this illness.
Rupp says AFM first surfaced in 2014 and again in 2016. This is a mysterious disease that causes muscle weakness, difficulty in eye movement and difficulty swallowing and breathing. There is no treatment or cure.
Rupp say while it is rare it is very serious.
With physical therapy and supportive care, many children recover others will have partial or full paralysis
