A proposed change to California’s Low Carbon Fuel Standard rules intended to reduce the carbon penalty for corn based ethanol doesn’t go far enough. That’s according to Growth Energy CEO Tom Buis who says they need to reduce even further to come up to speed with the rest of the country on renewable fuels.
Under the proposed change the carbon penalty in California would go from 30 grams per megajoule originally set in 2009 to 23.2 grams per megajoule. Buis says the original CARB standard and their new proposal are flawed because they’re based on the Indirectl Land Use change concept.
Under the Indirect Land Use model, when lands are cleared such as rain forests for new farm land, the result is higher greenhouse gas emissions.
