South Dakota’s growing sheep industry was showcased during the Lamb Bonanza at South Dakota State University this weekend. The South Dakota Sheep Growers Association served lamb samples prior to the basketball game and Executive Secretary Lisa Surber says it’s a great way to introduce their product to consumers.
She says six sheep pelts were also auctioned off during halftime of the men’s basketball game to raise money for animal science scholarships. They brought nearly $9,500.
SDSGA President Wade Kopren says it is an exciting time to be in the sheep industry as they are growing in producers and numbers in the state’s flock.
He says they also have a lot of young people coming back to the family sheep operation or striking out on their own with the lower investment verses crop farming.
He says lamb prices held mostly steady in 2018 as they didn’t feel a lot of impact from the trade war. At the same time prices for fine wool were very strong.
