A number of groups and organizations in South Dakota have joined forces to push for more funding for roads and highways.

The “Roads Are Vital” coalition is backing a comprehensive package of tax and fee increases put together by a legislative summer study committee.

Brenda Forman, with coalition member South Dakota Association of Cooperatives, says good roads are a pretty basic need…

The proposal would raise taxes and fees by about one hundred million dollars a year, with dollars divided between the state and counties.

Forman says they are working through the basics…

Forman says there is always the possibility that support for the bill will splinter because of the costs involved…

Legislative sponsors of the package have said the actual need could be as high as one hundred forty million dollars a year.
