The Food and Water Watch along with the American Antitrust Institute and National Farmers Union are asking the U.S. Justice Department to block the proposed merger between Dow Chemical and DuPont. Food and Water Watch’s Senior Policy Advocate Patrick Woodall says if allowed the merger will curtail innovation, raise prices and reduce cultivation choices for farmers and consumers.
He says his group is concerned about several possible mega mergers on the horizon.
Woodall says should mergers be approved for Dow DuPont as well as Syngenta and Monsanto would give them three quarters of the corn seed and over 60 percent of the soybean seed markets..
Woodall says between 1985 and 2000, 75-percent of the independent seed companies were bought up by the top six seed companies.
