Groups Ask for Update of Grass Fed Labeling Guidance

The Center for Rural Affairs, American Grass Fed Association and several other groups have written USDA asking for an update of grass fed labeling guidance. The original standards set by the Ag Marketing Service were revoked in 2006. Now FSIS is taking over and setting those rules. Traci Bruckner with the Center for Rural Affairs says what they’re considering is below what the standards should be for grass fed beef.

She says if the standards are changed it will just confuse consumers.

Bruckner says by lowering the grass fed label requirements it will also hurt those grass fed producers who’ve established a solid business.

Also signing onto the letter to USDA are the National Farmers Union, Consumer Federation of America, Consumer Reports, the National Sustainable Agriculture Coalition and Western Organization of Resource Councils.
