Green Plains Incorporated of Omaha, Nebraska is donating 5,000 gallons of ethanol to the state of Iowa for its hand sanitizer production project. That’s a project between the Iowa Renewable Fuels Association and the Iowa Prison’s Industries. Green Plains President and CEO Todd Becker says what they’re donating is a higher graded product than fuel ethanol.

He says the aim of their company is to support everyone who needs help during the Covid 19 pandemic.

Becker says the ethanol industry is currently under a lot of economic pressure and while hand sanitizer isn’t the answer to the economic woes, it’s still needed to help deal with the coronavirus crisis.

Iowa Prison’s Industries so far has produced over 10,000 gallons of hand sanitizer and is producing approximately 4500 gallons a week. Besides Green Plains Incorporated, both Southwest Iowa Renewable Energy and Absolute Energy have donated to the hand sanitizer project.
