The agricultural community is closely watching the outcome of a Supreme Court case regarding the Interstate Commerce Clause. Iowa Senator Chuck Grassley says the court will decide if they’ll hear a case on whether California can ban pork that does not meet their production requirements, which dictate minimum space requirements for livestock. That is set to go into effect on January 1.
Grassley says this is a precedent setting case of particular interest to Iowa as the top pork producing state. However, the Senator is hopeful SCOTUS will stop California from dictating production practices for producers across the nation.
He says if the high court doesn’t rule in favor of agriculture, he’ll initiate Congressional action to undo the 2018 ballot initiative.
Grassley says if Proposition 12 is allowed to go into effect in California it will mean higher prices for pork in the store and some products will no longer be available.
