Iowa Senator Chuck Grassley says he’s reintroducing his legislation to ban packer ownership of livestock. He says the concentration in the packing industry has been escalating over the last few years and its having a negative impact, especially on the beef market.

He says the vertical integration by packers and the lack of competition in the marketplace is also getting worse.

Grassley says he’s heard a great deal about the problem from cattle producers at his recent town hall meetings.

Grassley says there’s not enough time this year with the shortened summer legislative schedule to get this measure done. So he’ll re-introduce the legislation in early 2017.
