Iowa Senator Chuck Grassley has reintroduced his farm legislation to close the farm subsidy loophole in the 2014 farm bill. The bill would restore provisions taken out by the conference committee during the writing of the farm program provisions. It puts in restrictions so only farmers who are actively engaged in farming can receive government payments.
Grassley’s legislation would limit the number of non-farming managers to one per operation and provide the farm safety net for only those who actually farm.
He says without his limitation measure, those who don’t deserve government assistance receive it and it makes it more difficult to enact meaningful farm legislation.
Grassley says his legislation would also level the playing field for beginning farmers. If adopted the change would apply to the 2017 and subsequent crop years.
