The Nebraska Environmental Trust Board has voted to approve a state grant program that will expand flex fuel blender pumps. The Nebraska Farmers Union provided both oral and written testimony in favor of the Nebraska Renewable Fuels and Air Quality Program. Farmers Union President John Hansen says by expanding flex fuel pumps, it brings both environmental and economic benefits.
He says Nebraska has 178 blender pumps while Iowa has over 1,000. Hansen also says by getting more ethanol out it creates more environmental benefits because it removes the toxins produced by regular gasoline.
Hansen says this grant program will be very helpful to smaller filling stations and will provide more access for flex fuel vehicles.
Hansen says the total amount of money funded in this grant program is $3 million for three years at a million dollars a year. According to the Nebraska Department of Motor Vehicles, the state has over 252,500 flex fuel vehicles.
