The shipment of U.S. grain to export markets from Midwestern states on the inland waterways continues to be stalled by wet weather and record flooding. Soy Transportation Coalition Executive Director Mike Steenhoek says farmers who have wanted to move stored grain to export channels have had barge shipments shut off since mid-March.
He says since barge shipments have been halted or stalled at best, grain shipments have gone by rail.
Steenhoek says it’s less expensive to ship by rail than by truck but barge shipping is the most economical way to get grain to market.
Steenhoek says the near-term weather forecasts aren’t very promising with heavy rains expected this week along the river transportation system.
