The National Grain and Feed Association along with four other grain groups are asking APHIS to slow down on making changes to biotech regulations associated with genetically altered plants. NGFA President Randy Gordon says APHIS is attempting to modernize its biotech rules and determine whether those traits pose a plant, pesticide or noxious weed risk. He says the agency needs to proceed cautiously and deliberatively with their regulations.
He says APHIS also needs to look at any possible trade effects that may come up as a result of these new rules they’re considering.
Gordon says any quick movement on approval of biotech traits that aren’t recognized by U.S. trading partners can seep down and negatively impact the farmer.
Joining NGFA in asking APHIS to move slowly are the North American Export Grain , Corn Refiners, North American Millers and National Oilseed Processors Associations.
