April 22 is Earth Day and a time we observe the role farmers and agriculture are playing in raising crops and livestock in a sustainable manner. Midwest Dairy Association CEO Molly Pelzer says dairy producers have been adapting their production practices for many years which has lowered their carbon footprint. Due to innovative farming and feed practices, a gallon of milk in 2017 required 30% less water, 21% less land and 19% smaller carbon footprint than in 2007.
She says dairy producers are also recycling manure and turning it into green energy by installing methane digesters.
And all livestock producers recycle manure, which provides nutrients to grow the crops that in turn feed their herds. That helps them produce meat with a lower carbon footprint for consumers tables.
