Grain And Feed Group Backs Biotech Labeling Bill

Markup on Senate Ag Chairman Pat Robert’s Voluntary Biotech Labeling Legislation is scheduled for today in the ag committee. National Grain and Feed Association President Randy Gordon says his group backs that measure. He says Senator Roberts is still trying to get support for his measure from Democrats on the panel.

He says Senate Ag Committee ranking member Debbie Stabenow prefers a mandatory labeling program. Gordon says that may not be necessary given the fact most labeling any more is very thorough and gives out a lot of information consumers could access.

Gordon is hoping some type of compromise can eventually be worked out so a national voluntary biotech labeling measure can go forward.

Proponents of Robert’s bill including many agricultural groups want a national voluntary standard that super cedes various piecemeal state regulations.
