The Morningside Mustangs used some 7th inning fireworks to pickup a first round win in the 2016 NAIA Softball Opening Round, meanwhile Doane took top-ranked Oklahoma City to the 7th before falling 2-1.

Morningside moved one victory closer to a berth in the upcoming NAIA Softball World Series when it staged a dramatic last inning rally to defeat Grand View 9-6 in Monday’s first round action in the Morningside Bracket of the NAIA Softball National Championship Opening Round.

The Mustangs, ranked 15th in the nation and the No. 2 seed in the Morningside Bracket, advanced into Tuesday’s winner’s bracket final against unranked University of Great Falls, which upset top seed Campbellsville 4-1 in Monday’s other first round contest.

Doane received a stellar pitching performance from Ellie Doughty as she limited No. 1 Oklahoma City to four hits and struck out seven batters. The Stars had an equal performance from Georgia Wall (21-0) as she allowed three hits and struck out seven.

Doane falls to the consolation bracket and will face Friends University at 3 PM on Tuesday in a rematch from last year’s NAIA Opening Round consolation game, won by the Tigers 2-0.
