The two brackets for the 2016 Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC) Postseason Baseball Tournaments opened play on Thursday.
Top seed, and regular season champion, Midland is one bracket host (1,4,5,8 seeds), while second seed Briar Cliff is the other bracket host (2,3,6,7 seeds) for the two four-team tournaments.
In Fremont, the top seed Midland Warriors were 6-0 winners over eighth seed Dakota Wesleyan, while five seed Concordia shutout fourth seed Northwestern 12-0. On Friday at NOON Midland will play Concorida, while at 3pm Northwestern will face Dakota Wesleyan. There will also be a 6pm elimination game on Friday night.
In Sioux City, seventh seed Hastings was a 10-9 winner over two seed Briar Cliff, while three seed Morningside posted a 17-10 win over six seeded Mount Marty. On Friday at 9am Morningside will play Hastings, while at NOON Mount Marty will face Briar Cliff. There will also be a 3pm elimiation game on Friday afternoon.
Play continues on Saturday with Championship Games at Noon at both sites and the “if needed” game at 3pm.
The Midland and Briar Cliff bracket winners will meet on Tuesday, May 10, in the GPAC Baseball Tournament Championship Game. The final game will be a single nine-inning contest.
Midland has secured the league’s first berth to the NAIA Opening Round, while the GPAC Tournament Champion will receive the second berth. If Midland wins the GPAC Tournament then the regular season runner-up (Briar Cliff) will receive the second GPAC berth to the NAIA Opening Round.
