South Dakota Governor Dennis Daugaard signed SB 45 last week, which is a compromise measure that defines raw milk for human consumption. The measure was brought forward by a working group led by the State Agriculture Department. Working group member and raw milk consumer, Gena Parkhurst says this legislation will allow more consumption and production of raw milk.

Parkhurst says the raw milk working group will next participate in the writing of the rules as well as work on future education efforts.

Parkhurst says members of the raw milk working group will submit their comments and thoughts on the rules to State Agriculture Secretary Lucas Lentsch. She says those are due by April 10.
