This week Nebraska Governor Pete Ricketts outlined his legislative goals for the 2020 Unicameral. He recommends including $50 million to share the $400 million cost of disaster relief projects submitted to FEMA, along with an additional $9.2 million to aid counties hit hardest by last year’s flooding.
Center for Rural Affairs Policy Director Johnathan Hladik says his group supports the state providing funding for flood relief.
He says the Governor also wants property tax relief and any measure State Senators back must be fiscally responsible for it to work.
Ricketts has a goal of cutting $500 million in property taxes over the next three years, but some state Senators don’t believe that’s enough. Hladik says State Senators will have to find a balance to achieve that.
The Governor wants no tax increases, protection of the property tax credit fund and to encourage spending restraint in local governments just like at the state level.
