Several Minnesota farm groups are disappointed with the recent executive order issued by Governor Mark Dayton to reverse the decline of pollinators. The Governor outlined action steps for the Minnesota Department of Agriculture to restrict the use of neonicotinoids. Minnesota Soybean Grower’s President Theresia says these are important pesticides used by most of the state’s growers.
She says the executive order came out of nowhere and surprised most farmers. Many of the actions will require new legislation and she hopes to work with the Governor to change the order to make it more reasonable for producers.
Gillie says most farmers follow best management practices when applying pesticides and are environmentally responsible.
Gillie says she understands the concerns involving pollinators and neonics, but is concerned the Governor didn’t consult with affected producers before issuing the executive order.
