The government shutdown is creating increased uncertainty for South Dakota farmer. Agriculture Secretary Sonny Perdue did announce this week the Market Facilitation Program signup deadline would be extended to a period equal to the number of business days FSA offices were closed once the shutdown ends. however, South Dakota Corn Growers Executive Director Lisa Richardson says farmers need more certainty.
She’s hoping the shutdown also ends soon so the new farm bill can get implemented.
Richardson says a resolution to the trade issues would also create some certainty for farmers.
Trade talks extended to 3-days this week between the U.S. and China, but no details were released on progress or additional purchases.
