There was another incident within the Nebraska Department of Corrections on Friday where inmates at the Diagnostic Evaluation Center in Lincoln that involved a fire in a housing unit.  This is one of several in recent months where guards were attacked by inmates.  Governor Pete Ricketts is not happy that a legislative committee working on the next two year budget cut the additional corrections officers he requested in half.

Governor Ricketts says they felt it was important to fully fund corrections budget request to be able to perform and protect the public safety.  He says he is very disappointed that the legislature reversed course.  The Appropriations Committee decided not to fund all 48 new positions, a nearly $11-million cost over two years.  The state is facing a projected $288-million revenue shortfall.
